Today and some amazing chemical reactions!

I woke up with a headache this morning.  I'm not sure why.  I did end up having pain relief by 3pm this afternoon.  I couldn't handle it much longer, it didn't help that Little H's runny nose was making her irritable.  She wasn't in the mood for sitting on her Nana's lap, even though the last few days she's been asking to see Nana, and cuddle Nana.  I hope she gets over this cold soon and gets back to her more cheerful self.

On a happier note, I did find lots of bargains in the Charity shop today.  I got a board game and several books including Jungle Book a Classic that C hasn't read yet!  I think she will like it all the more now she has watched a Tarzan film.

N made this wonderful cheesecake this evening!  My thighs hate it but, oh, it was so tasty!  Stupid Moshi Monsters magazine! *wink*

Yes that is a gingernut base!

So we're up to what I've been doing this evening.  Well, I have been spending rather a long time tonight trying to think up some fun experiments to try at our next HE meet up.  I always find some really good ones that for obvious reasons we won't be able to do so I thought I'd share them on here.   So for those of you who love science...

This is a reaction of sodium and chlorine!

The poor little gummy bear!

Sodium acetate, when heated and cooled, becomes supersaturated in water. When it comes in contact with another object it re-crystalizes.  This reaction also causes heat, and so this has a practical use in heat pads. Sodium acetate is also used as a preservative, and also gives salt and vinegar chips their distinctive taste. It is referred to in foods as E262 or sodium diacetate.

According to Wikipedia: “the freshly prepared colourless solution slowly turns an amber colour, suddenly changing to a very dark blue. This slowly fades to colourless and the process repeats, about ten times in the most popular formulation, before ending as a dark blue liquid smelling strongly of iodine.”

I think I will just find an Elephant toothpaste experiment for now; but maybe not this one:

I think I might go for a lower percentage of hydrogen peroxide for ours lol!

Hope you enjoyed this as much as I did!
