It's not just about home education, I also write up science resources, Maths resources, educational resources. There are over 100 science experiments/resources to try.Lisa Gwinnellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16217510693331174728noreply@blogger.comBlogger455125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6590150121803751861.post-31336319782324674012018-01-26T14:46:00.002+00:002019-06-20T22:54:01.350+01:00How to make a simple catapult with lolly pop sticks<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I run Science Crazy Clubs in Ipswich and we've been having so much fun learning hands on. I sometimes even share a few of the projects we do on the Science Crazy Blog. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The last Science Crazy club was all about how catapults worked and so we made some fun catapults and had fun testing them. The most recent blog I have shared on Science Crazy is this fun Catapult made from Lolly pop sticks and elastic bands! </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The link to the instructions for how to make one yourself can be found by clicking on the photo. All you'll need are lolly sticks and elastic bands and find something to propel... a marshmallow will do! Do let me know how you got on if you try it - I love to hear from my readers!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is my daughter playing with her own catapult. I love to make our home education as hands on as possible as learning through play is the best way, especially through their younger years I think.</span>Lisa Gwinnellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16217510693331174728noreply@blogger.com25tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6590150121803751861.post-81507017103121357572016-09-07T18:48:00.000+01:002016-09-07T18:48:53.471+01:00Science: Lego Soil LayersSo, I was inspired by a photo I saw floating around the web the other day and just had to fit it into our learning on Monday.<br />
<br />
My 6 and 8 year old loved it so I thought I would share so you can have a try too!<br />
<br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
If you like you can follow this activity up with another more scientific version, called: <b><a href="http://www.anordinarylife.co.uk/2014/10/science-experiment-what-is-soil-made-of.html">What's in Soil? </a></b>that can be found by clicking on the photo below...<br />

</span></ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><strong><br /></strong></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><strong>ALWAYS WEAR GOGGLES WHEN DOING SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS. It's <br />important to practice. Also, wear aprons or get yourself a lab coat </strong></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><strong>and be like a real scientist! It will protect you and your </strong></span><strong style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">clothes </strong><br />
<strong style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">from being damaged. This silly putty can stain and ruin, </strong><br />
<strong style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">clothes, carpets, curtains etc.</strong><br />
<br /></div>
<br />
<strong><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">STEP ONE</span></strong><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Put about 30 ml of PVA glue in a cup, mix a little food colouring in. </span><br />

<div style="border: currentColor;">
<strong><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">STEP TWO</span></strong><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In another cup spray the starch spray until you have about 40ml of liquid starch settled in the container. </span></div>
<div style="border: currentColor;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="border: currentColor;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><strong>STEP THREE</strong></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><strong><br /></strong></span></div>
<div style="border: currentColor;">
</div>
<div style="border: currentColor; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Add the liquid starch to the PVA and colour and stir until it all binds together.</span></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<span style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">What is a Polymer? How is it so rubbery? </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Spaghetti is a very useful way of showing how and why polymers act the way they do. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Spaghetti is made of long strands very much like the molecular structure of a polymer. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When you boil up the spaghetti it runs like water, but then you take it out of the water and the starch makes it sick together and feel a bit sticky. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Leave it a bit longer and you can bounce it! This is due to the starch in the pasta. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><strong>Why is spaghetti such a good example?</strong> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It is a great example because the molecules in the crazy putty are a linear polymer. Which means the molecules are all in a line rather than branching. Linear in this sense does not mean a straight line but one like cooked spaghetti that curls about.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial";"></span><br />
<strong><span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: medium;">Something else I like to do when there are plenty of people about to join is, is to make a model of a polymer using HUMANS!!</span></strong><span style="font-family: "arial";"></span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Ask at least 5 to stand in a row holding hands. Now they are like a linear polymer molecule. It's that simple.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">You can try adding the PVA glue to the starch liquid instead of the start to the PVA glue...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>

Just for FUN! Here's how we made ours...</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Draw a rectangle. Make it 3cm by 14cm.</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To ensure the angles of your rectangle is right use a protractor. All the angles are meant to be 90 degrees.</span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Now measure two centimeters in from one end of the rectangle we made in <b>STEP ONE</b> and then draw a line to make a small rectangle within it like this...</span></div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>STEP FOUR</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Measure and mark with a pencil 2cm from the top of the inside line of the small rectangle and 2cm from the bottom of the line joined to the semi circle. Use these marks and the corners of the small rectangle to make triangles like in the photo below.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><img alt="" id="id_e09e_efe1_3732_79d9" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Z5R4ZUOBV2I/V4eAunNRAiI/AAAAAAAAgXI/BiAjAxluIa8/%25255BUNSET%25255D.png" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><i>These two bigger triangles are isosceles and the smaller ones are right angle triangles.</i></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>Maths Fact: the three angles inside a triangle always add up to 180 degrees!</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>STEP FIVE</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Mark 1 cm down from the inside line of the small rectangle and 1cm up from the inside line of the small rectangle and then join the dots to the corners of the newly made isosceles triangles to make smaller right angle triangles, like so...</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><img alt="" id="id_c49a_bd64_dce0_f55d" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xGnxB-mE2iY/V4eAwIRASCI/AAAAAAAAgXQ/ft55cFkJJkM/%25255BUNSET%25255D.png" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>STEP SIX</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Now colour it in!<br /><br />We were thinking of 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' by Eric Carle, when we made ours so we coloured the semi circles in red, the large rectangle in green and the triangles orange.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><img alt="" id="id_a10c_dffe_46ea_1069" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-0DQin54AV9k/V4eAyQWKTwI/AAAAAAAAgXU/gCXmDQyyccI/%25255BUNSET%25255D.png" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /> </span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>STEP SEVEN</b></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b><br /></b></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Then we cut it out carefully. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you like, before you rearrange the pieces and put them back together, you can draw a background on an A4 piece of paper. Something like this...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><img alt="" id="id_81f_5302_2862_7d28" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-e2OKnd1UZqM/V4eA0K4T-xI/AAAAAAAAgXY/ti1Paugynjw/%25255BUNSET%25255D.png" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Then stick your shapes on the picture to make a caterpillar shape like this...</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><img alt="" id="id_586f_9e19_718a_3bb5" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-oYXBPmj5du8/V4eA2eB2ylI/AAAAAAAAgXc/IhIodmXNtvU/%25255BUNSET%25255D.png" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What we learnt from this project:</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Counting</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Measuring</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Shapes</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Angles</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Practicing using a compass and ruler </span></li>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/bxkKtHSlR4Y/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/bxkKtHSlR4Y?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We made a fun craft painting the leaves, then drawing and colouring tiny eggs using photos we found on the internet. It was amazing to see all the different shapes and colours of butterfly eggs there are.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><img alt="" id="id_a01a_55bb_b31a_2c21" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-gVnfqiZAgE8/V4Utr92yZbI/AAAAAAAAgUY/p_HPVMhmUcQ/%25255BUNSET%25255D.png" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /></span></div>
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">WE cut the egg drawings out and using glue stuck them to the leaf. I talked to them about how the female butterfly, when she lays her eggs, secretes a special chemical that acts like a glue to secure her eggs to the leaf she chooses.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This was their finished egg on a leaf art...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>

<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="" id="id_8544_24e5_d495_3362" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-KirWbNFJeu0/V4PRg7mSwPI/AAAAAAAAgTM/C8uSZFSc1lg/%25255BUNSET%25255D.png" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /> </div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The first thing we did, even before getting dressed or eating breakfast was finding the hungry caterpillar puzzles!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Once we had eaten breakfast we started on our project. This weekend I popped to town when I was child free and found, in The Works, these lovely butterfly masks...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><img alt="" id="id_b432_b6ed_98d1_7bcf" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-xtKvx2TZ9Io/V4PR2G01CBI/AAAAAAAAgTQ/h1ByBjNjujo/%25255BUNSET%25255D.png" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /> </span></div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This morning they started to colour them in. We talked about symmetry familiarizing the younger two with the word that they will find in their maths workbooks.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We then got the paint out and experimented with other ways of using art to create symmetrical butterfly shapes! Just the simple old fashion method I remember from when I was small. A folded piece of paper, paint on one side squish it together - <b>the sort of craft that never loses its magic!</b></span></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe frameborder="0" height="281" id="y_id_5091_ad4_36ea_b00a" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/a_UvaKrr2n0" width="500"></iframe><br /></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; font-size: large;">So much fun.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">They used there feet to make a giant one too that is now on my kitchen door...</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><img alt="" id="id_dde2_7e07_fd07_6dde" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-746TPB28gXE/V4PSBp2P6LI/AAAAAAAAgTU/UkXZm43cLVA/%25255BUNSET%25255D.png" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Then we found out that we don't get the butterflies today. They are coming on Friday. Something I had miss read no doubt - I can be ditzy at times.<br /><br />Still we continued to have fun. We made those carrot cakes inspired by Hugly and Friends book, and turned some into butterfly cupcakes. If you click on the photo (after 8pm tonight) it will lead you to the recipe!</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="" id="id_b38_13d7_ee49_b2b5" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-dC3Bsc-dK9Q/V4PSNYoXzzI/AAAAAAAAgTc/NjjyGShH52w/%25255BUNSET%25255D.png" style="height: auto; width: 298px;" title="" tooltip="" /> </div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We are going to spend the next few days preparing for our caterpillars instead, so as promised I will continue blogging about butterflies over the next few days but no photos of caterpillars until Friday now!</span></div>

<span style="color: #272a34;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Static electricity is an electric phenomenon that is well known. It is where charged particles are transferred from one place to another.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #272a34;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CP1th3c6xkg/VsSImellMGI/AAAAAAAAfvY/OL8L1hDFR6A/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-CP1th3c6xkg/VsSImellMGI/AAAAAAAAfvY/OL8L1hDFR6A/s320/1.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<span style="color: #272a34;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white; line-height: 15.75pt;">
<span style="color: #272a34;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white; line-height: 15.75pt;">
<span style="color: #272a34;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Here's something fun you can try when you are learning about static electricity and is great as an introduction to electricity.</span></span></div>
<div style="background: white; line-height: 15.75pt;">
<span style="color: #272a34;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="background: white; line-height: 15.75pt;">
<span style="color: #272a34;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When you rub a balloon against your hair or a jumper, charge transfer happens, this is when <b>static electricity is made; </b>when you rub a balloon against your jumper or hair, the balloon steals electrons (negatively charged particles) when this happens you leave the jumper, or your hair in a positively charged state and the balloon is negatively charged.</span></span></div>
<div style="background: white; line-height: 15.75pt;">
<span style="color: #272a34;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>

<span style="color: #272a34;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The balloon will be attracted back to the sweater because opposite charges attract like opposite pole attract with magnets. </span></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">One of my friends who come along
to my science groups back in 2012, asked me if we could do some experiments on
heating materials.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>She said she had
tried heating a copper coin and couldn’t get it to spark green and didn’t know
why.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Well, this is why it didn't produce that green flame...<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">If you heat a modern copper coin
it will go black, no green flame.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This
is because you have formed copper oxide; </span>the black formed during the heating of the coin in flame is the copper oxide. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: 'trebuchet ms', sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">When it is cooled down obviously,
you can clear away the copper oxide.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Then I was left with the
question: how could I make a green flame using copper?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>How I did this was not using a copper coin But I did use copper sulphate.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Using a spoon and an alcohol burner I heated it and voila green
flames!<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Fab.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Be sure that you’re in a ventilated area when
you do this.</span></div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><b>What else can we do with Copper
sulphate?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></b><o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: large;"><b><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"><br /></span></b></span>

<div>
<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">We could put an iron nail in it. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>What happens?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>The liquid turns from blue to green. <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;"><span style="color: black;">When an
iron nail is placed in a copper sulphate solution, iron displaces copper from
copper sulphate solution forming iron sulphate, which is green in colour.<br />
<br />
Therefore, the blue colour of copper sulphate solution fades and green colour
appears.</span><o:p></o:p></span><br />

<br>
As you can see in this photo the glue we made was strong enough to stick two boxes of eggs together and hold the weight of the six eggs in the bottom box! <b>Pretty impressive!</b></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">This is a really simple experiment and one that I've done loads of times before, I've just never blogged it.</span> </span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;"></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Last week I showed the kids at Science Crazy Club how heat energy works and how it can be useful.</span><br>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">To demonstrate conduction I used a couple of experiments and this is one of them,</span><br>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">All you will need for this experiment is</span><br>

<li><span style="font-family: Arial;">Goggles!</span></li>
</ul>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"><br></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">Did you ever wonder how a wind-up toy works? </span><br>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Well, if you open it up you will see all the components that make it up. You will notice a spring inside too. It looks more like a ribbon but it's still a spring as when it tightens up it stores potential energy that when released it is what moves the wind up toy!</span><br>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br></span>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 107%;">Potential
energy is stored energy that is ready to be used. There are many different types of potential
energy… Gravitational potential energy,
electrical potential energy, heat potential energy and there are more, like
mechanical potential energy which we will be the first things we get hands on
with in this chapter. When energy is stored up waiting to be used we call it
potential energy.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

the stored energy, the potential energy, is released and used to do something,
we call this kinetic energy. Kinetic
means movement, and this is because when energy is released it tends to make
things move or something to happen!<br><b><br>When we let go, the potential energy is transferred to kinetic energy and the car moves along the table or the ground!</b><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">In short, <strong>diffusion</strong>, involves molecules moving from higher concentration to lower concentration. This movement is known as the <strong>concentration gradient.</strong></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MnzxT4rE_cQ/VaaC0LphvCI/AAAAAAAAd5s/V0Grq2m8dKI/s1600/P1000196.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MnzxT4rE_cQ/VaaC0LphvCI/AAAAAAAAd5s/V0Grq2m8dKI/s400/P1000196.JPG" width="400"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This happens with liquids and in gases. As gases are more difficult in an experiment to show children how diffusion works I will use this experiment which involves liquid, in this case water.</span></div>
<br>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We will also experiment with temperatures in the experiment and talk about how temperature effects the rate of diffusion. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">First the experiment...</span><br>

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;"><strong>I call it summer snow, simply because it's a perfect activity for summer. This is a great bit of sensory play and one that's super for the summer because it cools you down; the chemistry between the water and sodium polyacrylate creates an endothermic reaction!</strong></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><b><br></b></span><br>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><b></b></span><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><b><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1FYoysU7NuM/VZvet7xDl4I/AAAAAAAAd4Q/a3Ay0NHGIFY/s640/blogger-image--514594912.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-1FYoysU7NuM/VZvet7xDl4I/AAAAAAAAd4Q/a3Ay0NHGIFY/s640/blogger-image--514594912.jpg"></a></b></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: medium;"><b><br></b></span>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;"></span><br>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;">Also watching it grow stirs up excitement and then, due to the fact that it's non toxic properties kids can play for hours with it! </span><br>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"></span><br>
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">It's a great way to cool them down on a warm summer's day! And when you're finished, experiment more or give it to the plants: it's great for plants as when the soil dries out they soak up the water in the sodium polyacrylate. It's often used in gardening.</span><br>
<br>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">It can also be found inside baby nappies! </span><br>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;"></span><br>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;"><strong>YUCK! </strong></span><br>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;"></span><br>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS;">I know, but this stuff is clean, so there'll be no wee!!! And the reason why it's used like this is sodium polyacrylate is able to soak up as much as 200 to 300 times it's original volume in water! The chemical reaction that occurs when this happens is an endothermic one which is what gives it the cool snow effect.</span><br>
<br>
<span style="font-family: Trebuchet MS; font-size: x-large;"><strong>It feels awesome! Give it a go! Here's how to do it...</strong></span></div><a href="http://www.anordinarylife.co.uk/2015/07/summer-snow-and-how-to-experiment-with.html#more">Click here to see the rest of the post >></a>Lisa Gwinnellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16217510693331174728noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6590150121803751861.post-10559464882579429072015-07-03T14:45:00.000+01:002015-07-09T16:01:56.474+01:00Review: EdPlace<div style="text-align: justify;">

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">My eldest really enjoyed using their site, she said: </span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif; font-size: large;"><strong>'There's just something about the way it is that makes me remember how to do things and remember the facts.' </strong></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">My eldest is very academically minded, she's not always so impressed by online resources but this one she does enjoy; she loved using this as an extra tool, because lets face it, learning is more fun when there's many ways of doing it.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">My 10 year old and 12 year old loved the rewards setting. As the parent you can decide what these rewards can be, whether that is earning extra time on the games console or the telly or extra pocket money, you decide or agree with a reward suitable for you and your child. All this is optional however.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The worksheets are for all grade, from Primary years up to GCSE. I liked the fact that the worksheets were designed by experienced teachers and the fact that I was able to choose what they should cover that week. I also got reports of how well they were doing and then, when they had been on it for a while, worksheets were suggested to help with their progress.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"></span><br />
<strong><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: large;">I would say it's definitely worth the free 7 day trial and see what you think. </span></strong>Lisa Gwinnellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16217510693331174728noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6590150121803751861.post-4008207660298461442015-06-21T23:43:00.001+01:002015-07-09T15:20:05.801+01:00Science, Maths and Website design...<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;">I have recently been asked to write a post about these three

is a lot to be learnt when designing your own website.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>My eldest has just started and really it has
been very educational.</span></span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;"></span></span><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;">If you have thought about building a website for your child, or
letting them have a go, here are some of my thoughts…<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;">Firstly, there is a lot of maths behind web design.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>There’s the calculations of the layouts,
shapes, working out ratios – <span lang="EN-US" style="color: #333333; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_rectangle"><span style="color: blue;">Golden Ratio
and Golden Rectangle</span></a> being one of those. <o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="color: #333333; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: large;">It’s quite fascinating and I think maths is beautiful, through maths we can create the most beautiful of images and beautiful images are key to a good
web design after all. </span></span><br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="color: #333333; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: large;"></span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LoXjJlXrEoY/VYc76Ea-gHI/AAAAAAAAd1Q/PmQp4gUAhmE/s1600/Golden%2BRectangle.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" height="263" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LoXjJlXrEoY/VYc76Ea-gHI/AAAAAAAAd1Q/PmQp4gUAhmE/s400/Golden%2BRectangle.png" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span lang="EN-US" style="color: #333333; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: large;"><o:p></o:p></span></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"></span><br />
<span lang="EN-US" style="color: #333333; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><o:p><span style="font-size: large;"><span lang="EN-US" style="color: #333333; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">Most of us think of maths as the opposite of creative, due to the fact
that it’s precise and requires logic perhaps. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>However, it is because its geometrical shapes,
that are so perfectly and precisely measured and created in maths, what we
achieve is truly beautiful – that is my opinion anyway.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">
</span><br />
</span></o:p></span></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="color: #333333; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span lang="EN-US" style="color: #333333; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-size: large;">Using websites to teach science, or present an idea to show how
something works is an incredibly important resource.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Science is a very practical subject and
websites allow us to see things in 3D.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>They allow the user to interact and see science in a way that can be
difficult in the real world, making diagrams come to life, something that just cannot
be done in a book.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></span></span></span></div>
<span lang="EN-US" style="color: #333333; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">
</span><br />
</span></span></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="color: #333333; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span lang="EN-US" style="color: #333333; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-size: large;">If you want to know a bit more about webpages and how they are made

<span lang="EN-US" style="color: #333333; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;">
<span style="font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">
</span><br />
</span></span></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 8pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="color: #333333; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span lang="EN-US" style="color: #333333; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">But who has the time to create these wonderful websites, learn all the
html and come up with designs that will impress your audience quickly?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Well, unless you are a whizz at computer
programming with an artistic eye this might be very difficult or time
consuming.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span>There is a lot of
maths in programming in general.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></span></span></div>

<span lang="EN-US" style="color: #333333; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;"><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;">Websites use html mostly, unless you a whizz at it, it can
be a slow process which is where WYSIWYG editors, otherwise known as website builders,
help.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Here are 10 of the best that you
can check out here: </span><a href="http://www.top10bestwebsitebuilders.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: blue; font-size: large;">http://www.top10bestwebsitebuilders.com/</span></a><span style="font-size: x-small; mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">
<span style="font-family: Times New Roman;">
</span>I'm not saying that learning to code, learning computer programming, is pointless. I think it's really important for kids to learn, my girls love using Scratch and my eldest has taken an interest in HTML very recently too. Saying that, it's still good to know all your options too and, if you are in a hurry, or you're not ready to do all that coding yet - it's definitely worth looking into Website builders.</span></span><span style="font-size: large;"> </span></span><span style="font-size: large;"> </span><br /></div>
